Biography

Peter Schreier is well-known throughout the world as a lyric tenor par excellence, his renown earned through triumphal performances on the opera and concert stages of New York, Tokyo, Vienna, Milan, Berlin, Buenos Aires, and in most of the world's major musical centers.

In the last ten years, Schreier's reputation has been enhanced by his activities as an outstanding conductor. His performances of Bach's Passions both as singer of the Evangelist and at the same time, as conductor of the orchestra, chorus, and soloists, are unique on the international music scene. He often conducts various other baroque oratorios and operas such as Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte, etc.

In singing lieder, the critics praise the beauty of Schreier's voice, his faultless technical control, his understanding and feeling for the song-the way in which he conveys "the whole impact with perfect balance between words, music and heart." One German reviewer called Mr. Schreier the most captivating of lieder singers, praising "his intelligence and musicianship as well as his extraordinary art of arrangement and his humor, all of which make him a veritable paragon of a Liedsänger."

Peter Schreier received his early training at the famous Dresden Kreuzchor. Very soon it was obvious that his voice had predestined him to be a great Mozart singer. He combines an impeccable feeling for style and a superior musicality, and these, along with a transparent simplicity of expression, lend his performances the "magic power" that has caused such frequent comment.

Schreier has received numerous international awards, and has appeared in every conceivable international music festival. Today, his name is synonymous as one of the world's great lyric tenors.

A voluminous discography testifies to his outstanding reputation as a song recitalist, including various styles from baroque to 20th century. The three big Schubert cycles were issued, with Andras Schiff at the piano, and were awarded with the British Avery Prize.
