Biography

Austrian conductor Alexis Hauser was born in Vienna in 1947. He graduated with distinction from Hans Swarowski’s masterclass, as well as Franco Ferrara’s and Herbert von Karajan’s master courses.

His conducting debut took place in Vienna in 1973, whereupon Seiji Ozawa invited the young man to Tanglewood for the summer of 1974. After having been awarded the Kussewitzky prize, he debuted as a guest conductor in Atlanta and at the New York City Opera in 1975.

During the next few years, Mr. Hauser conducted orchestras and in cities throughout Europe and North America: Vienna Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Radio Orchestra in Hilversum, Berlin, Moscow, Toulouse, as well as in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Montreal, Toronto, and Mexico City.

His first permanent post as a music director came from Orchestra London in Ontario, Canada, followed by his invitation to become the principal guest conductor at the Budapest Philharmonic. More invitations from Canada followed in 2001.

While in Canada he was invited to conduct the Bruckner Orchestra in Linz as well as the Czech Philharmonic in Brno, the Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest, and orchestras in Belgrad, Zagreb, and Krakow. Invitations soon arrived from around Western Europe, places such as Finland, Norway, and Iceland.

Since September 2001, Alexis Hauser has been the Director of the McGill Symphony Orchestra in Montreal, where he received invitations to appear at the International Festivals of Lonadiere and also at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Gazette praised Hauser’s performance of Falstaff as a “revelation” and listed his interpretation of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony as one of the “Top 10 Classical Music Performances of 2002.” In 2004, Hauser performed the premiere of Mahler’s Klagende Lied in Montreal.

He spent the summer of 2005 in Vienna, conducting the “Vienna Collage” ensemble, which is composed of members of the Vienna Philharmonic. They concentrated on music of the 20th Century, performing mostly at Vienna’s Schoenberg Center.

In June 2005, Mr. Hauser interrupted his stay in Austria to fly to Zürich to conduct the premiere and five performances of the opera Kalkül, composed by Werner Schultze, whose librettist is Karl Djerassi.
