BiographyAndrás Vass was appointed as assistant conductor to Iván Fischer at the Budapest Festival Orchestra during the 2005-06 season. He completed his musical studies after 19 years of intensive schooling; where he not only received a certificate in high school as the best student of the year, but two years later, he was declared a “master of music” in his conducting class. After receiving a special conducting prize in 2003, he began to appear on the podium publicly in concerts with the North Hungarian Orchestra in its “Town Hall Evening Series,” concert cycles with the Tirgu-Mures Philharmonic, where he appeared as pianist and celesta player, and conducted Mozart Piano concertos, as well as an evening of Verdi’s music. He has worked with several very well known Hungarian orchestras, such as the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music Symphony, and more. Maestro Vass began to work with famous Hungarian artists such as violinist Barnabás Kelemen, cellist László Fenyö, etc. During the 2005-06 season came his lucky break: He became assistant conductor to Maestro Iván Fischer, who is permanent conductor of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. This competition is held every year and in 2005, more than 50 young people from 17 countries participated. From now on, he will be working with Maestro Fischer and his orchestra as often as the Maestro needs an assistant. Aside from speaking Hungarian and Romanian, Maestro Vass is fluent in English and is also learning to speak Italian.
